Petrographic examination of concrete and cementitious materials (ASTM C856) including visual examination of specimens in as-received condition, stereomicroscopy of polished cross-sectional surfaces, thin section analysis using fluorescence microscopy, and phenolphthalein staining to characterize the composition and condition as well as causes of deterioration or distress in submitted samples,
Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (SEM/EDS) analysis (ASTM C1723) for elemental composition of concrete, cementitious materials, aggregate and secondary deposits,
Chloride analysis to measure acid-soluble chloride content (ASTM C1152) or water-soluble chloride content (ASTM C1218) within a material to evaluate for corrosion potential and external chloride exposure,
Hardened air void system analysis (ASTM C457) to evaluate for total air content and air void system parameters for freeze-thaw durability,
Volumetric proportioning testing (ASTM C457) to quantitatively assess proportioning of concrete in comparison with mix design or specifications,
Bulk resistivity testing (ASTM C1876) to characterize the capillary porosity of concrete mixture(s),
Petrographic examination of aggregates (ASTM C295) to identify potentially deleterious materials with potential for alkali-aggregate reactivity, staining, and/or pop-outs,

Union Inspection to Meet the Demands of Your Project
For more than 40 years, Twining has been a signatory to an agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 12, and we are proud that in 2020, our partnership with the Union expanded statewide to include Local 3. Due to the stability and benefits offered by our company and the increased compensation paid to our inspectors and technicians, Twining attracts the very best personnel. Our inspection personnel are paid the prevailing wage as determined by the California Department of Labor, Director of Industrial Relations, in accordance with Part 7, Chapter 1, Article 2, Sections 1770, 1773, and 1773.1 of the California Labor Code.

Our considerable pool of inspectors enables Twining to provide our clients with the inspection support they need at any location, for any shift, as project needs arise. Our dispatch office is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Twining’s long-standing relationships with steel fabrication shops throughout the world allow our inspectors to provide seamless shop fabrication inspection no matter where it may take place. Our experienced staff has inspected the fabrication of structural steel as far away as Japan and Taiwan.

Nondestructive Examination
The field of nondestructive testing is undergoing rapid change, bringing technologies that had previously been the subject of research into the arena of practical application. Twining has been at the forefront of these applications, from participating in the post-Northridge SAC committees through being the first firm to fully implement the requirements of FEMA 353 and now AWS D1.8, to the field implementation of the latest technologies such as Phased Array Ultrasonics and Time of Flight Diffraction. Twining is fully compliant not only with ASNT SNT-TC1A, but with the stricter certification standards of CP-189.

Twining’s core testing services are overseen by Robert M. Ryan, CWI, ASNT NDT Level III, who has been with Twining and its affiliated companies since 1977. Robert possesses vast experience in all areas of field inspection and is a leading expert on all aspects of structural steel construction and nondestructive testing. Robert also provides strategic counsel and technical direction for many of our largest projects and has worked on some of California’s most distinguished landmarks, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, Walt Disney Concert Hall and Disney’s California Adventure.

An Exterior Elevated Elements (E3s) Housing Balcony Inspection (CP1481) is a comprehensive inspection of the balcony structure, including the railings, decking, and supports. The inspection is performed to identify any potential hazards or defects that could compromise the safety of the balcony.
The CP1481 inspection is based on a set of standards developed by the Canadian Construction Association (CCA). The standards cover a wide range of topics, including:
